Online Medical Assistant Program Curriculum
FVI’s medical assistant program in South Florida is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in outpatient care. Through a combination of live online instruction, hybrid coursework, and in-person hands-on training at our Miramar campus, you’ll develop the clinical and administrative skills needed to thrive in today’s healthcare settings.
In just 36 instructional weeks, this diploma program equips you with the foundational knowledge to support physicians during physical exams, minor procedures, and diagnostic testing such as phlebotomy and EKGs. You’ll also gain proficiency in front-office responsibilities, including patient scheduling, intake, and maintaining electronic health records.
Students receive in-service training and CPR certification as part of the curriculum. Upon completion, you’ll be eligible for multiple certification exams and prepared for roles such as medical assistant, EKG technician, or phlebotomy technician.
This program prepares you to sit for the following certifications (exam costs not included):
- NRCMA – National Registered Certified Medical Assistant
- NRCEKG – National Registered Certified EKG Technician
- NRCPT – National Registered Certified Phlebotomy Technician

A high school diploma or recognized equivalent is required. If your education was completed outside the U.S., you’ll need to submit an official English translation of your academic records along with a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency.

What medical assistant skills will I learn?
When you graduate, you’ll be prepared with essential skills and hands-on experience for entry-level roles in medical offices, clinics, and diverse healthcare practices. Our Medical Assistant program will prepare you to:

Do I need certification to be a Medical Assistant?
While certification is not required in all states, most employers prefer or require certified Medical Assistants. FVI’s program prepares you for multiple certification exams, including NRCMA, NRCEKG, and NRCPT.
Certifications are issued through NAHP (National Association of Health Professionals). At the end of the program students are eligible to apply for the following Registration/Certification Exams.
- NRCMA (National Registered Certified Medical Assistant – ($75 Cost not included)
- NRCEKG (National Registered Certified EKG technician) – ($75 Cost not included)
- NRCPT (National Registered Certified Phlebotomy Technician – ($75 Cost not included)
MA Graduates are also eligible to apply for the National Registered Certified Coding Specialist Certification – NRCCS (Cost not included)

What is a Medical Assistant Externship?
An externship is a supervised training experience that takes place at an actual healthcare facility. At FVI, all Medical Assistant students complete a 180-hour externship during the final six weeks of the program to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

Is the Medical Assistant Program 100% online?
No. While many classes are available online, some components must be completed in person at our Miramar campus, including labs and externship.
Do I need a computer?

Are Medical Assistant classes taught in Spanish?
At the Miramar campus, classes are offered in English. However, students who prefer bilingual instruction can explore our Miami campus, where classes in the Medical Assistant program are taught in both English and Spanish.
Are CCMAs the same as CNAs or RMAs?
No, they are different roles with unique responsibilities and certification paths.
- A CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) is trained in both clinical and administrative tasks and typically works in outpatient and medical office settings.
- A CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) provides hands-on patient care under the supervision of nursing staff, often in long-term care or hospital environments.
- An RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) performs similar duties to a CCMA but is certified through a different credentialing organization.

Online Pharmacy Tech Program Curriculum
FVI’s online pharmacy tech program in Florida prepares you to become a certified pharmacy technician in just 36 instructional weeks. You’ll learn drug classification, pharmacology, pharmacy law, compounding, inventory management, and insurance billing through both online and in-person instruction.
The program includes a supervised externship and CPR certification. Upon graduation, you’ll be prepared to take both the PTCB CPhT and ExCPT exams, which are essential certifications for pharmacy techs in Florida.
Graduates earn a diploma and become eligible to apply for registration with the Florida Board of Pharmacy, which is required to work as a pharmacy technician in the state.

Certified Health Coaching
The National Society of Health Coaches training program is the only health coaching program designed by clinicians for clinicians and other allied healthcare providers.
Providers are making the transition from the traditional approach of “Do as I instruct, or prescribe you to do” to one founded in Evidence-based Health Coaching (EBHC)® with Motivational Interviewing (MI). Special conversational skills and best practice clinical interventions are used to actively engage patients/clients in talking about change and to self-discover one’s own ambivalence about it. Over 300 studies have proven MI’s efficacy and effectiveness since the early 80’s. It can set the stage for behavior change in as little as one fifteen-minute encounter.
NSHC’s program teaches you how to create a 50/50 patient-provider partnership in health; recognizing and using the patient’s own expertise about his/her life to drill down to the personal motivation for health behavior change! Additionally, patients/families are guided to better self-manage their health, health risk, and acute or chronic health conditions resulting in optimal wellness, improved health outcomes, lowered health risk and decreased healthcare costs.

Will I earn a credential with NSHC's health coach program?
For licensed clinicians, the credential of CHC (Certified Health Coach) is granted upon passing the NSHC timed Certification Exam and Skills Competency and is valid for 5 years from the date the exam is passed, as long as one remains in good standing with the Society, one’s professional license/credential remains current and unencumbered by the issuing body for the 5-year term of the certification.

Practical Nursing Program Curriculum
The Practical Nursing program is designed to provide you with a comprehensive foundation in patient care, pharmacology, and specialized areas such as pediatrics, maternity, and mental health. You’ll complete 57 credit hours over 72 instructional weeks (approximately 18 months), combining classroom learning, labs, and clinical rotations. The program prepares you to sit for the NCLEX-PN®, the national exam required for LPN licensure.
Graduates are prepared for entry-level roles as Licensed Practical Nurses in settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, physicians’ offices, and home health agencies.
Graduation from the Practical Nursing diploma program does not guarantee employment or licensure. To become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you must pass the NCLEX-PN® and meet Florida Board of Nursing requirements.

Be at least 17 years old. Parent or guardian consent is required for applicants under 18.

Online Nursing Classes: Your Curriculum
FVI’s Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program is ACEN accredited and includes 75 credit hours completed over 90 instructional weeks. The curriculum combines online and in-person nursing courses, hands-on lab simulations, and clinical experience. It also prepares you to take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses), a key step toward becoming a licensed registered nurse.

In addition to general admissions requirements, applicants to the ASN program must also meet specific academic criteria, including minimum scores on the Scholastic Level Exam (SLE) and the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). HHA/Nursing Assistant Program Curriculum
The Nursing Assistant/Home Health Aide (NA/HHA) program at FVI School of Nursing and Technology prepares students with the knowledge and hands-on skills needed to provide safe, compassionate care in home health, hospital, and long-term care settings. Students gain expertise in patient care procedures, principles of nutrition, infection control, elder care, rehabilitative activities, and communication skills.
Upon completion, graduates receive a diploma and are prepared to sit for the Florida Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) exam. Successful certification opens opportunities to work as Nursing Assistants or Home Health Aides in hospitals, nursing homes, and agencies approved by Medicare and Medicaid.

Will I be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at the end of the program?
Graduation does not guarantee employment. Graduating from the program earns you a diploma, but to become a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in Florida, you must pass the state CNA exam administered by Prometric. The CNA is a state-recognized credential that proves you are qualified to provide direct patient care under the supervision of licensed nurses. It is required for employment as a CNA in hospitals, nursing homes, and other healthcare facilities.
Our program fully prepares you to challenge the Florida CNA exam, though passing is not guaranteed. Qualified graduates who the lead instructor and test approve within 90 days of graduation may also receive a voucher covering the exam fee (up to $155).
Will I be a certified Home Health Aide at the end of the program?
Florida does not issue a separate state license for Home Health Aides. However, completion of this program prepares you for employment as an HHA with agencies approved by Medicare and Medicaid, subject to employer requirements. Graduation does not guarantee employment.

To enroll in the Patient Care Technician program at FVI School of Nursing and Technology, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Be at least 17 years old. Applicants under 18 must have a parent or guardian co-sign the enrollment agreement. Applications are accepted year-round, but class sizes are limited. We encourage you to apply early to secure your seat in the next start date.
