Have you always wanted to be a nurse, but you don’t have the time or budget to invest in a four-year degree? A rewarding career as a licensed practical nurse (LPN) is possible in as little as 14 months. Here, we explain how to become an LPN, with FVI’s practical nursing program in Miami, Florida as the first step.

What Is an LPN, and Where Do They Work?

An LPN is a type of nurse who performs a wide variety of essential patient care duties under the supervision of other providers, like physicians or registered nurses (RNs). Because LPNs are so versatile, job opportunities are plentiful for these healthcare professionals.

LPNs work in many settings, including hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, rehab facilities, schools, and home health.

Path to Becoming an LPN in Florida

1. Practical Nursing School

Completing a practical nursing program is the first step to becoming an LPN in Florida. FVI’s practical nursing program in Florida combines hands-on learning and classroom education, providing a solid foundation for a thriving career as an LPN.

FVI students gain practical experience using patient simulators and other equipment, along with instruction and support from qualified and caring teachers. FVI caters to both traditional and non-traditional students alike. Whether you are a recent high school graduate or attending nursing school while working or caring for children, we have the tools and resources to help you succeed.

Our student-centered approach includes day and evening classes and accelerated programs to help you earn your diploma in as little as 14 months and gain confidence and competency for the next step: the NCLEX.

2. NCLEX-PN Testing

After earning your diploma from FVI’s practical nursing school, you are now eligible to take the NCLEX-PN exam. Passing the NCLEX-PN is the next step to becoming an LPN. Passing the exam is required to earn your license and practice as an LPN. The NCLEX is the leading nurse licensure and certification exam in the U.S. It is a pass/fail exam that is administered electronically.

All candidates begin answering questions at the same level. Based on these responses, the automated CAT system estimates the candidate’s ability and adapts the following questions accordingly. Candidates are required to answer anywhere from 75 to 205 questions. Once the system is 95% confident the candidate is above or below the passing standard, the NCLEX is complete.

In Florida, practical nursing students can take the exam three times before they must complete a remedial refresher course. However, FVI is committed to preparing students for the test with NCLEX-related instruction, practice tests, and personalized support.

3. Licensure

After passing the NCLEX-PN, applying for licensure is the final step to becoming an LPN. The LPN license is generally issued within 7-10 days of passing the NCLEX. The Florida Board of Nursing requires LPNs to renew their license every 24 months and complete at least 24 hours of approved continuing education during that renewal period.

With LPN jobs projected to grow 3% by 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is a great time to pursue a career in licensed practical nursing in Florida. To learn more about FVI’s nursing programs, call, visit, or apply online today!
