A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is one of the most versatile healthcare professionals in the industry. Once a student has completed a practical nursing program in Florida and passed the NCLEX-PN, they earn their license and the ability to work in a wide range of care settings. Keep reading to learn about the diverse and rewarding opportunities available to Florida’s LPNs.

Job Opportunities for LPNs

Here are some of the places and ways LPNs use their knowledge and training to support patients of all ages and stages of life.

Residential Facilities

Florida is a leading destination for retirees, with over 5.5 million residents ages 60 and older. LPNs assist members of this aging population with serious health conditions and those who cannot live independently. They work alongside healthcare providers in nursing homes and other residential facilities to meet patients’ needs and monitor their cases.

Hospitals

Approximately 15% of LPNs work in state, local, and private hospitals, according to the BLS. LPNs working in hospitals collaborate with doctors and other members of the patient’s care team to provide short- and long-term patient care. While LPNs work in a variety of departments, they are primarily employed in hospital emergency rooms, maternity wards, and surgery departments.

Physicians’ Offices / Outpatient Clinic

Working in a doctor’s office or clinic is another popular LPN career path. It offers a slower pace and more predictable schedule than hospital nursing jobs. Job duties for these LPNs depend on the physician or practice specialty. Surgery centers, urgent care clinics, and cancer treatment centers often employ LPNs.

Rehabilitation Facilities

Inpatient medical rehabilitation facilities are specialty hospitals that treat individuals recovering from illness, injury, and surgery. They offer temporary care during transition periods, typically for patients moving from hospital to home. LPNs work with other healthcare providers to help patients achieve physical milestones along their recovery journey, enabling them to function and live more independently.

Home Health

Home health refers to medical services that licensed professionals provide to patients in a personal residence or group home. These roles are ideal for nurses who prefer greater autonomy, flexible scheduling, and the ability to build meaningful personal connections with patients in the comfort of their own space.
