International students who want to transfer schools must update their Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) record, and this process has specific eligibility guidelines and timing considerations. At FVI School of Nursing and Technology, we are committed to providing the guidance and support you need to navigate the SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record and transfer with confidence. From the moment you inquire about transferring to FVI, we’ll work with you to help clarify the process and provide one-on-one support every step of the way.

Updating Your SEVIS Record: Why It’s Important

As an international student, you are assigned a unique SEVIS ID number starting with the letter N. This number can be found on the top right side of the first page of your Form I-20. Your SEVIS record contains personal information and details about your academic status and immigration authorizations. It is updated if you change programs or schools. Although your record transfers with you, your SEVIS number remains the same.

Failure to follow the proper procedures for transferring your SEVIS record can lead to serious consequences. Your SEVIS record can be terminated, which means you are considered “out of status.” This can significantly impact your ability to transfer schools and continue your studies in the U.S.

The dedicated international enrollment advisors at FVI is here to help you avoid these complications. We provide the support you need so that you can focus on your education and future career with confidence.

SEVIS Transfer Eligibility

You must meet the following requirements to transfer your SEVIS record to a new nursing school:
Maintain F-1 Status
To start, you must fulfill the obligations necessary to maintain your student visa status, including:

  • Enroll in a full course of study (minimum credit hours required)
  • Maintain regular academic progress toward your degree or diploma
  • Maintain a valid Form I-20 and passport

For more information on these guidelines, contact the designated school official (DSO) at FVI.

SEVP-Certified School Acceptance

Before transferring, you must apply and be accepted to your future school. You can only attend schools that, like FVI, are certified by the U.S. Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)

SEVIS Transfer Timing Considerations

Transfer Release Date

The transfer release date is when your SEVIS record is transferred to the new school. Typically, you have a 60-day grace period from the end date of your current program or your optional practical training (OPT) to transfer schools. During this time, communicate with the designated school officials (DSOs) at both institutions to set a transfer release date that aligns with your new program’s start date.

New Program Start Date

Your new program must start within five months of the end date of the program at your transfer-out-school or OPT end date; whichever comes first.

SEVIS Record Activation

Once you have successfully transferred to your new school, the designated school official (DSO) at your new school will activate your SEVIS record within 30 days of the start date of your new program. They may also issue a new Form I-20 to reflect your updated information.

FAQ’s

Q: How long does it take to transfer a SEVIS record?

A: If all requirements are met, a SEVIS record transfer can happen immediately because the process is digital. However, it may take additional time for your transfer-in-school to create a new Form I-20. The time it takes to process a SEVIS transfer request can vary by institution.

Q: Can you transfer a terminated SEVIS record?

No, you cannot directly transfer a terminated SEVIS record; if your SEVIS record is terminated, you must first apply for reinstatement with USCIS before transferring to another school, meaning the new school will need to accept your terminated record and assist you in the reinstatement process.

Q: Can I transfer a SEVIS record multiple times?

A: Yes. While you can only transfer your SEVIS record to one school at a time, transferring to multiple schools consecutively may be possible. There may be restrictions on the number of potential transfers, but each move has practical limitations to consider. F-1 students- Students can transfer their SEVIS record during an academic program or after completing an academic program.
