If you’re working toward a career as a pharmacy technician in Florida, the PTCB exam is a required step in the certification process. FVI’s Pharmacy Technician curriculum covers the same knowledge areas and domains tested on the Pharmacy Technician Certification Examination (PTCE).
Students in the Pharmacy Technician Program prepare to take the PTCE through coursework covering all four exam domains, a dedicated certification prep course with practice exams, and a 180-hour externship in a working pharmacy.

Who Is Eligible to Take the PTCB Exam?
The PTCB offers two eligibility pathways to sit for the PTCE:
Pathway 1
Complete a PTCB-Recognized Education/Training Program (or expect to complete one within 60 days of applying) like FVI's Pharmacy Technician program. Graduates may qualify for the CPhT exam through Pathway 1 upon graduation, subject to PTCB eligibility requirements
Pathway 2
Complete a minimum of 500 hours of work experience as a pharmacy technician.
All candidates must also have a high school diploma or equivalent. During the application process, candidates are required to disclose any criminal history, including felony convictions and drug- or pharmacy-related violations. PTCB reviews these disclosures on a case-by-case basis. Full eligibility details are available on the PTCB website.
What to Expect on Exam Day
The PTCE is a computer-based exam administered at Pearson VUE test centers nationwide. Here is a quick overview of the exam format:

Ten of the 90 questions are unscored. These are questions PTCB is evaluating for possible use on future exams—they don’t count toward your final score. However, they’re mixed in randomly and aren’t labeled, so there’s no way to know which ones they are. It’s therefore important to approach every question with the same level of attention.
PTCE Score Requirements and What Happens After You Test
The PTCE uses a scaled scoring system that ranges from 1,000 to 1,600. A score of 1,400 or higher is required to pass. This scaled score accounts for slight differences in difficulty between exam versions, so there is no fixed percentage of correct answers needed.
After you finish the exam, an unofficial pass/fail result appears on screen immediately. Official score reports typically post to your PTCB account within approximately three weeks and include performance breakdowns by knowledge domain. If you pass, your CPhT certification becomes available through your PTCB account and your credential can be verified by employers through PTCB’s online verification system.
In Florida, earning your CPhT credential is one step in the process. You will also need to register with the Florida Board of Pharmacy before you can begin working as a pharmacy technician. You can apply for state registration while waiting for your official score report.
If you do not pass, you can retake the exam. There is no waiting period for a second or third attempt, though you will need to reapply and pay the $129 exam fee each time. A six-month waiting period applies before a fourth attempt.
Florida Pharmacy Technician Requirements
To work as a pharmacy technician in Florida, you must register as a Registered Pharmacy Technician with the Florida Board of Pharmacy. The process generally involves:
Completing a Florida Board of Pharmacy–approved training program (FVI's Pharmacy Technician program meets this requirement)

Submitting a registration application through the Florida Department of Health
Meeting age, background check, and other application requirements
Completing a training program and earning certification are separate steps. PTCB certification alone does not replace the requirement to complete a Board-approved training program in Florida. For the most current requirements, check directly with the Florida Board of Pharmacy.

FVI's faculty and staff provide personalized, one-on-one guidance throughout the program. Career Services support is available to assist with resume preparation and interview skills. Financial aid is available to those who qualify.
PTCB-Recognized Program status
Because FVI meets PTCB's education criteria, graduates qualify for the CPhT exam through Pathway 1 immediately upon graduation.
FVI's Pharmacy Technician Program at a Glance
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects pharmacy technician employment to grow 6% nationally through 2034, which is faster than the average growth rate for all occupations. In Florida, the outlook is especially strong: the Florida Center for Nursing projects a 23% increase in demand for pharmacy techs statewide through 2037, nearly four times the national rate.
FVI’s 36-week (approximately 9 months) Pharmacy Technician program prepares students to work in hospital and retail pharmacy settings and to sit for the PTCE or ExCPT certification exams upon graduation. The curriculum builds knowledge across core pharmacy areas including pharmacology, pharmacy law, medication dispensing, and Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems.
Upon completion, graduates receive a Pharmacy Technician Diploma.
