Monitor (EKG) Technician Test Prep
Upgrade Your Skills
Students will learn skills and activities that a Monitor/Telemetry Technician will be expected to perform on the job. Duties include: registering a patient, maintaining cardiac monitoring device support, educating the patient, administering cardiac tests, analyzing rhythms and processing test findings. After this continuing education class, you will have the confidence to operate as a skilled Monitor/Telemetry Technician.


What Can I Expect?
- Describe the cardiovascular system
- Identify legal and ethical responsibilities of an EKG Monitor Technician at the Telemetry Unit
- Demonstrate knowledge of, apply and use medical instrumentation modalities
- Perform patient care techniques in the health care facility
- Recognize normal and abnormal cardiac telemetry monitoring results
- Describe common cardiovascular drugs, their actions, use and adverse effects
- Set up telemetry monitoring, interpret and report abnormal rhythms to the nurse
- Measure the ECG waves, segments and intervals
- Calculate the heart rate and identify sinus rhythm
- Identify Arrhythmias
- Perform clerical duties
- Demonstrate the importance of health, safety, and environmental management systems in organizations and their importance to organizational performance and regulatory compliance
- Read, interpret, process, coordinate and transcribe physicians’ orders
- Organize and maintain efficient work practices
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively.


Eligible Candidates:
Graduates from Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician who are already nationally certified as an EKG Technician.
Eligible candidates are expected to have prior knowledge of regulatory and compliance standards (OSHA, HIPAA, informed consent, medical records), medical ethics, patient safety, emergency response, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, communication with patients and staff and ECG troubleshooting.
This is considered a job upgrade course for graduates of a Medical Assistant or Patient Care Technician program who which to acquire additional skills, required for positions such as a patient monitor technician, ECG/cardiac technician or telemetry technician.
Course Length: 35 contact hours
Course Duration: 7 Fridays
Class Days/Times: Friday / 8:30am to 1:30pm
