Average Workday Duties and Expectations

Medical assistants work with doctors and other healthcare professionals. They perform a variety of duties depending on the location where they work. However, medical assistants can expect to perform both administrative and medical tasks.

Every day as a medical assistant will probably be a little bit different. There will be different patients and different needs that arise. However, there are certain duties and expectations for medical assistants on a daily basis. Medical assistants will often schedule patient appointments and record health information for patients. They will measure the vital signs of patients when they come to the doctor’s office or hospital, and they may take notes about patient history and other symptoms. They may assist physicians with examinations, and they might also perform basic procedures such as drawing blood.

To be a medical assistant, you need to have a basic medical knowledge as well as good communication and organizational skills. Sometimes, you will be performing more administrative tasks like dealing with health insurance, and other times, you will be focused on patient care.

  • Teaches You SkillsTo be a successful medical assistant, you need to be able to perform specific medical procedures. During your medical assistant school program, you will learn all about these medical procedures. You will learn how to take vitals, draw blood, administer injections, perform CPR, perform EKGs, and more. You can be better prepared for the world of work with your medical assistant school program.
  • Gives You Real-World Experience Another great reason to attend a medical assistant program is that it will give you real-world experience. This program offers you an externship or clinical hours where you get to work on the job. During your working experience, you will be supervised by a medical professional, but you will still get some real experience in the daily job duties of a medical assistant.
