Yes, nursing students must pass the NCLEX-PN exam to become licensed and work as licensed practical nurses (LPNs) in the United States. FVI School of Nursing and Technology’s practical nursing program in Florida prepares students with the knowledge and skills necessary to pass the NCLEX and launch their rewarding careers as LPNs.

What Is the NCLEX?

The first step to becoming an LPN is to enroll and complete a practical nursing program at an accredited school like FVI. Once students graduate, they can sit for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for practical nurses. The NCLEX-PN is a standardized computer adaptive test that measures nursing competence in several content areas, including:

  • Basic care and comfort
  • Coordinated care
  • Health promotion and maintenance
  • Pharmacological therapies
  • Reduction of risk potential
  • Safety and infection control

The NCLEX uses a unique scoring system. As test-takers answer questions, the test continually adjusts based on those responses until it is determined with 95% accuracy that they have either passed or failed. Some takers reach 95% in as few as 80 questions, while others may need to answer the maximum number of questions.

Generally, the better you do, the fewer questions you have to answer. Yet, even if you have to answer every question, you can still pass the NCLEX.

After completing the NCLEX, you should receive your results within six weeks. If you don’t pass the exam on the first try, you can retake it after a mandatory waiting period.
