The I-20 Transfer Process: What to Expect

To help you plan and prepare, we’ve broken down the transfer process between nursing programs for international students step by step.

  1. Apply and be accepted to the new school. Before you can initiate a transfer, you must be accepted at your new school. FVI admissions professionals are here to help you navigate this change, from choosing the right program for you to completing your application.
  2. Notify your current school. Next, you should notify your current school’s designated school official (DSO) that you plan to transfer and provide proof of acceptance to FVI.
  3. Complete the necessary paperwork. You will fill out a transfer request form at your current school and any forms FVI requires for new international students.
  4. Receive a new Form I-20. DSOs from both schools agree on a transfer release date. Once that date arrives, FVI will create your new I-20.
  5. Submit a Form I-539. Once you receive your new I-20, you must submit a Form I-539 to United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) to extend your stay in the country (if applicable).
  6. Register for classes. Next is the exciting part! You can now enroll in your chosen nursing program at FVI. Generally, you must enroll in the next available session or term and notify the DSO at FVI as soon as you begin attending.
  7. Provide financial information. During the transfer process, you are required to show proof that you have the financial resources to live and study in the U.S.

While this may be your first experience transferring schools in the U.S., the process is not new for FVI. We are experienced in helping international students complete these steps correctly and on time so they can continue their studies and maintain their status.

Things to Consider When Transferring Schools as an International Student

  • Plan Ahead: The transfer process can take several weeks, depending on the time of year and the schools involved. Avoid delays by having all required documents ready and submitting them on time.
  • Maintain Your F-1 Status: Continue attending classes at your current school until the transfer is finalized. Follow immigration regulations, including working no more than 20 hours per week on campus. You must enroll in an SEVP-certified school like FVI and maintain good academic standing.
  • Visa Expiration: If your visa expires while you are outside the U.S., you must renew it at a U.S. consulate or embassy to reenter. If your visa expires while in the U.S., you can remain legally as long as your SEVIS record and I-20 are valid.
  • Financial Readiness: Verify that you have sufficient funds to cover tuition, fees, and living expenses. FVI’s Financial Assistance professionals can help international students explore resources and solutions to make education affordable.
