The Many Types of Medical Assistants
Before you can embark on your journey following medical assistant school you’ll need to determine what direction you want to take it and in this article, we’re going to cover some of the most popular and common professions:
Clinical Medical Assistant
If one of your wishes is to work in direct patient care then this is going to be your dream job. As a clinical medical assistant, you will work alongside a number of different medical professionals including doctors, nurses, and much more. Your duties will involve scheduling, taking x-rays, dressing wounds, and much more. This position, as with many others will require that you complete an accredited training program which often takes less than a year.
Certified Medical Assistant
Medical assistants can be either registered or unregistered, and if you wish to remain unregistered you can obtain the Certified Medical Assistant credential as it is available through the America Association of Medical Assistants. You can sit of the examination, answering a series of 200 questions over the course of thirty minutes. Once you are certified, you will need to sit for the exam once every sixty months.
Registered Medical Assistant
You can obtain the Registered Medical Assistant credential by contacting the American Medical Technologists. Once again you will need to sit through an examination, and then retaking it once every three years after you have managed to pass it.
Administrative Medical Assistant
An administrative medical assistant differs from the type aforementioned in that they handle the paperwork end of the practice. This means filing insurance claims, scheduling appointments, processing payments, and much more. In addition to that, as an administrative medical assistant, you may be responsible for overseeing other employees in the office.
These are the three most common jobs that you could undertake in the medical assisting field and you’re probably noticing that many of them are pretty similar in nature. There are however some subtle differences between every one of them, and with that being the case it will be important for you to spend some time looking at each one to determine which is best for your skills and your desires.
