Degree – You will need a high school diploma and a certificate from a patient care technician program.
Skills – Most schools will teach you these skills, though you may have some of them already:
- First AID
- CPR
- Disease Prevention
- Laboratory Procedure
- EKG
- Phlebotomy
Certifications – You will need the following certifications:
- PCT Certification
- Additional depending on employer and state requirements
Where will you work?
Patient care technicians will work in a variety of different environments which include assisted living facilities along with hospitals, clinics, and long term care facilities. Keep in mind that the standard of care and your responsibilities will change depending upon the location and the policies that are set in place. Also keep in mind that as a patient care technician you may need to take specimens for diagnostic testing, which can be a complicated endeavor in some cases.
The position of patient care technician is one that you can enjoy for the long term, or you can use this as a jumping off point as you prepare to enter another career or line of work.
