How to Choose a Medical Assistant License

Finishing your education at medical assistant schools opens you up to a world of possibilities, but there is a strong chance that you already know that. AMAA Certified Medical Assistant

Also known as a CMA, this certification will be furnished to you by the American Association of Medical Assistants, and covers a wide range of topics. These topics can include first aid, coding, insurance processing, office practices, anatomy, and much more. This is the most basic of certifications and will be required in small practice. For single-physician clinics this is a great idea, but if you’re looking to work in a more complex environment, then you might want to take your learning a bit further.

American Medical Technologies Certification

Medical AssistantThis is a more hands on certification that demands proficiency in technical and hands on areas which include:

  • Phlebotomy (RPT)
  • Dental Assisting (RDA)
  • Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT)
  • Medical Administrative Specialist (CMAS)

The test provided for this certification will be very similar to the one offered by the AMAA, even though it covers a much wider range of topics.

Qualifying for Certification

Joining the field requires you to finish medical assistant program, and that you graduate from a training program accredited by the Commission on the Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Alternatively, you could seek certification by the United States Department of Education.

Remember, there will be more people competing for the job at that level, and having the best certification and more capabilities will help you to better secure the job.
