Time Management Tips for College Students

College is an excellent opportunity to develop the skills needed to be successful in your career. Among these skills, an essential proficiency to develop is time management. Starting college is an exciting time filled with new possibilities. While you may want to seize every opportunity, your new obligations to coursework may test your ability to prioritize and maintain time for everyday life. Time management can be more difficult than any term paper. Successfully executed, time management provides an opportunity to change our lives.

Time management is the key to success as a college student. Managing our time properly, we are able to accomplish our objectives in stride. We are all given twenty four hours in a day; how we use those hours will maximize or detract from our ultimate goals.

Here are some essential time management tips to get you started on the path to a fruitful career.

  • Plan ahead—Anticipate the unexpected. By planning ahead, you are able to meet your obligations. Final papers and exams are representations of a body of work. They should not be the product of two all-night sessions at the library. Your assignments have due dates. However, you do not have to wait until the last minute to complete them. Plan ahead, your grades will thank you!

  • Budget your time—Twenty four hours is finite. You cannot squeeze extra time in the day, as much as we may try. So, do not overextend yourself. You may want to schedule in a break. It is easy to become involved in the wonderful activities in your new surroundings. Learning to incorporate these activities into your day is a skill that will help you for years to come.

  • Stay organized– Create a system to keep track of deadlines, exams, and important events. You do not have to reinvent the wheel. Use your phone or desk calendar. Having a reliable system of reminders will allow you to consider all information, plan accordingly and avoid cramming. It will be useful to know, ahead of time, that the final project is due the day after Spring Break.

  • Be realistic— you will not produce your best work when you are hunting for time to complete obligations. Be realistic with what you expect to accomplish. Reminder: There are twenty four hours in a day. Most of us enjoy taking time to sleep and eat. These are all considerations when planning your day, week, month, and life. Know your limits. Accept your limits. Reach for your goals with a plan.

We all work within 24 hour days. Once we accept the constraints of time, the better we will be at making the most of our day. Budget your time, stay organized and be realistic! To produce our best work, we must be rested and fueled. The remainder of the time is best used to help elevate us. Learning to manage time, you will be able to do more and to do it well.

Good luck!
