Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) are often the first healthcare professionals to arrive on the scene, providing critical support, stabilizing patients, and ensuring safe transport to medical facilities. This 16-week program helps students build confidence and competence in delivering basic life support care while developing the communication and teamwork skills essential in high-pressure medical environments.

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Program consists of three core components:

  • Lecture – 118 Hours
  • Lab – 100 Hours
  • Clinical/Externship – 96 Hours
  • Total Duration – 16 weeks

Classes are held two days per week, with additional hours for clinical rotations at approved medical facilities and EMS providers. The program is structured to support student learning through both theory and skill application.

Weekly Schedule

  • Day 1: Lecture-Based Instruction (9:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
  • Day 2: Lab Practice (9:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
  • Externships: Scheduled based on student availability, often including ride-alongs and emergency room rotations.

Real-World Experience

FVI maintains partnerships with local hospitals and emergency service providers to ensure students have access to high-quality clinical environments,

Externships provide a structured opportunity for students to observe professional EMTs in action and to apply the skills learned in class to real-life situations. These experiences also help students better understand teamwork, rapid decision-making, and the emotional resilience required in the field.

  • Patient assessment and triage

In addition, students have access to:

  • Practice exams and study tools

  • Academic guidance and faculty mentorship

  • A step-by-step review process for applying to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT)

The faculty consists of professionals currently working in EMS, which means students benefit from instructors who bring real-world context and current best practices into the classroom.

While employment outcomes vary and are not guaranteed, EMTs commonly pursue roles in:

  • Ambulance services (public and private)

  • Emergency rooms and urgent care centers

  • Fire rescue departments (with additional firefighter certification)
