Becoming a nurse is an exciting prospect, but before you can be registered via the state board, you must pass the NCLEX exam. This national test can be intimidating to newly graduated nurses, especially when it feels like your entire career depends on the results of your test. However, if you prepare properly the NCLEX exam is easily passable so that you can obtain a job and be on your way toward treating patients in no time.
How Long Should a Student Study for the NCLEX exam?
How long you should study varies depending on who you ask, but at the very least, you should plan to prepare for at least a month before the exam. However, if you want to pass the exam the first time, it is in your best interest to study as much as possible. Most examination preparation courses recommend spending at least two months preparing for the NCLEX exam. During this time, you should make it a point to review at least 100 questions from each area of the NCLEX exam. Due to the diverse nature of the exam, you need to make sure that you have knowledge from all areas of medicine. There is no such thing as being overprepared, so if you want to pass the NCLEX exam on your first try, make sure that you put some time into your objective.
How Long is the NCLEX Exam?
The NCLEX exam traditionally had 265 questions but following the COVID-19 pandemic and the shortage of nurses, it was shortened to 15 pretest questions and 145 questions. This is great news for those studying hard to pass the NCLEX exam. Despite the changes, those taking the NCLEX exam still have five hours to complete the RN and PN exams. Included in the total test time is an introductory screen followed by two optional breaks throughout the process. You are allowed to skip the optional breaks if you want just to keep testing. If you need a break, plan on the first break being offered to you after two hours have passed.
Can the NCLEX exam be taken at home?
You are not allowed to take the NCLEX exam at your home remotely. You must take it at an official Pearson Vue testing center.
