Have you ever thought about working in the intensive care unit? As a patient care technician, you have the opportunity to go into this area and really jump into the field. These types of patient care technicians will perform what is known as electrocardiograms and they will monitor waveforms. This is done in order to properly analyze patient heartbeat, so if a technician notices any changes in function, they notify the attending physician or nurses. Their job is critical to the patient’s well-being and they could potentially save lives every single day.
The job of a dialysis technician can be very challenging, and it is one that is going to require quite a bit of empathy. The patients you deal with will be seeking treatment regularly and will require quite a bit of your time. You need to be able to deal with them politely and answer any questions they might have. It is critical for you to remember that they are nervous and some of them may even fear for their lives. It is your job to put them at ease during the dialysis process.
As a hospital patient care technician, it will be your job to help patients with important needs such as wound care, IV maintenance, and much more. This type of technician focuses on the taking of vital signs, personal hygiene, grooming, etc. If you want to work as a hospital patient care technician you will need to have strong communication skills and be ready to work with a wide variety of people. This can be a very taxing job but also very rewarding in the end.
As you can see there are plenty of jobs you can take after patient care technician training and each one will require you to develop a different set of skills. The one skill that remains constant between them all, however, is the ability to communicate and interact well with others. This will be the core of your being as you are making your way through the medical field and good communication skills will take you a long way. Your education, however, will take you even further.
